Headed up to Portland a few weekends ago to record with the Underlings at Smegma Studio. Three days of tracking and I'm pretty dern stoked with the sounds.In a few weeks we're on to the mixin' stage...Drive up was OK until I got a little lost. I'm not big on heights, and getting discombobulated in Portland amongst its many towering bridges can be a pretty big bummer...after a few passes I was pretty much flippin' out. Got on the horn with Bryant and Ed and got straightenend back out. I'm fortunate that these two guys are parents of small children..they're accustomed to talking down hysterical little dudes and getting em back on track. I met up with em shortly thereafter and smooth sailing after that. I'm now familier with some more areas of P-town I've never been in before...we stayed in a place called The Palms. a remnant from the old Hwy 99. we dined in a Tiki bar that was pretty good burger-wise, and had our morning coffee in a place called the Black Cat Cafe. Good bagels...Smegma studio was a complete blast. way, way relaxed. perfect environment for the Underlings machine to do its thing.
Been thinking about punk rock a lot lately. I suppose that's not that unusual...coming up with more questions than answers..and I think thats a good thing.Guess I'm wondering why some of the the various 'scenes' made such quick work of antiquating themselves. A lot of talk about the 'good ol days' from folks that maybe never realized their full rock n roll potential.Like turning the present into the past a little too early..Pretty sure there's plenty of new rock n roll ground to tread, and the old fields can be tilled and turned endlessly......rock on.

Back to the SHACK. This place could use a cleanin. Not much usage...Turned 42 in February. A few more aches and pains than last year, but I still love to blast the Stooges and the Minutemen and play the bass, so all vital signs seem to be OK...The SUN has been coming out for a few minutes here and there, the deer are starting to make brave dashes out into the highway, and the cherry blossoms are starting to bloom. It still rains for weeks on end. I guess you could call it Spring..SYSTEM YOU RADIO is back up and running. Hung out over there and listened to some tunes with Eric S. and Dan Jones a couple of weekends ago. Had a great time. Played some new stuff from the new Mike Watt record, and some OFF! plus a whole lot of other good stuff too..UNDERLINGS are still going strong..4 years now ! Wow..we've got plans to record this Summer. Looking forward to that...Over and Out...

Pretty quiet around here...think I may yet find a topic to devote this blog to, as the everyday nonsense has been shifted to the Facebook page. (what a delightfully addictive time-waster!)..
Recently discovered that the local no job havin dingalings have been using my back yard as a shortcut between rural roads..This pisses me off to no end. Caught one of the shitbags the other day and asked him if he'd like me walking around in his yard. Seems like he got my drift...weird lookin dudes. Hope they go away.
Caught a band at a basement party gig the other night. Didnt catch the name. Cool to see that the scrungy basement rock scene still exists. Would love to play one of those gigs...Guess thats the run-down. Think I'll find some music to write about next time.

I was in Jackpot records in Portland a few weeks ago. They were blarin' some spooky garagey kinda stuff. I bought it. Golden Triangle "double jointer"..Its reverby, a little scary..and well, joyous and FUN at times. I dunno..good stuff, Another interesting thing about it is it needs "air" to sound right..Sounded GREAT in the record store..swirlin around amongst the bins and freeky people..It didnt sound all that hot on the car stereo..and I mean that in the GOOD sense..It's atmospheric..thus needing some atmosphere to sound really good..I like how it sounds from across the room at home on a jam-box..Thats my kinda stuff..I got a CD, but I bet the vinyl is super smokin'...also, evidently, there's a scene for this kinda music coming out of brooklyn,NY...my research shows me a bunch of freaky early 20's kids freekin out on some retro lo-fi surf sounds and some mighty dazzling outfits. I cant say I'm real hip to what's new these days, bein a 41 year old rock n' roll factory shmuck, but I try to keep my ear to the (under) ground and it appears to be rumbling right now. Good to hear the youngins playin' instruments and not record players..but hey, thats just me.
Picked up a vinyl copy of LIVE SKULL "Dusted" at House of Records in Eugene. another NY record, but from 1987..pretty much the ancestral roots of the aforementioned music..Dark, atmospheric..pulsing and disturbing. Not a whole lot of joy in these cuts,.They came out of the scene that gave us Lydia Lunch, Sonic Youth, and the Swans..Pretty dark..Personally I think its a classic.Thalia Zedek's vocals are freakin' amazing.
Last week I picked up some really good ska and dub reggae stuff. More on that another time. Enjoying supporting my local record stores.

Turned 41 last weekend. Feels a little more "official" than 40..I dunno..maybe its the back pain..and I keep catching myself trying to wrap my mind around the "kids" these days..hehhaha..uh oh.

Underlings went back to Arcata on Feb. 6.Played at the Alibi.Real nice folks working there. It was great fun...Still lovin the NorCal coast..and for a town of less than 20 thousand people..the nightlife is pretty poppin'..played with Splinter Cell again who ROCK. Hope to get those fellas up to Eugene sometime..and BIG thanks to Jeff Langdon for letting us crash at his cozy home.

Hmm..new year..The Underlings put out a 7 inch, 3 song EP called "Vice Squad". Its on Meth Bog Records out of Eureka,California. It was engineered by MO at the Number Station in Eugene, and the front and back cover artwork is by Sean Aaberg..The vinyl is a purple marble kinda thing. I'm stoked..Something really satisfying about a vinyl record..Speaking of records, the Eugene Record Convention is on Sunday. Hoping to get down there..Got a few goodies last year..Jeffrey Lee Pierce "Wildweed", The Gun Club "Las Vegas Story"..hmm..Hawkwind "in search of space"..DC3 "Vida"..and that Klark Kent green 10 inch record...Hopin' to maybe find a couple Live Skull records this year..I keep pickin' those up, putting em back in the bin, and then kickin' myself in the ass for a month or so..I spoze I could mailorder the damn things, but what fun is that?..Looking forward to flippin' through the records..been doin' that since I was 6 or 7..I got some Beach Boys record, I think on the Pickwick label or somesuch for a buck when I musta been in kindergarden!..Haha !..

Havent spent much time here on the Blog page..I'm sure all three of my readers are horribly dissappointed..hehha!..Liking the MyFace and SpaceBook a little more..I can write the ONE interesting thought that passed betwixt my ears that day and be done with it.Really just started this deal to see if I could navigate its various features and maybe learn a thing or two.
Last month the Underlings headed for So. Oregon and Northern California.Ed Cole did a bang up job of documenting that on his blog..so I'll keep it brief..I really couldnt ask for better travelling companions than my bandmates Ed and Bryant. We had a ball in Medford.Shared that gig with Pony Prance. Took in some gorgeous scenery on 199 through Southern Oregon. We stopped by the Illinois river so Bryant could fly fish.Saw a black bear run across the road in California! We had a rental van for our spacecraft, with a WalMart camo lawn chair for a back seat.Arcata was great fun too. We played with Splinter Cell and Nipplepottamus. Great bands. James from Splinter Cell and his wife let us bunk at their place after the gig. Super-duper awesomely cool people..and might I add that SPLINTER CELL kicks total ass !
One really cool thing about that trip..aside from the rock n' roll and relaxation..was I felt like something in my mind was waking up as we headed along the California Coast. I dunno..something about that highway lets the light in and clears some of the cobwebs..could just be late 80's flashbacks ( my California days were,shall we say, pretty electric)..but I'd like to think that its something a lot better.

Good times, good times. Had a little rain finally, and I guess the tree frogs are taking the soggy opportunity to go for a walk..I keep findin' the boogly headed little dudes all over the place.
Enjoying a much needed 4-day weekend..Basically..eating (a lot!)..sleeping..and eating some more..ahhh.Cant beat it..Mandy and I went over to Underling's drummer Bryant's house last night. Had a little cook-out with his family. Great folks. Love those guys..Tomorrow we grub with some more family and friends..I plan to gain 20 pounds by Tuesday.

Drove down from Portland last night listening to Husker Du "Candy Apple Grey" on cassette..my CD player is down. Bought a jambox from master-blaster Ed Cole. Thanks dude...That album stands up tall, and I dont feel like I'm rocking to the oldies..I think it'd be just as good if it had been released last week..aside from the 80's production sound..but..eh..who cares...if there is a re-master out there somewhere I dont think I want to hear it..
Speaking of driving..On the 4th of July I got pulled over by the MAN !..for having burned out license plate bulbs..considering half the population was either blowing off mortars over bone dry hay-fields or weaving around the highway drunk in sport utes, I thunk to myself.."damn.this is f**king stupid."..anyway..the patroleman, although a polite sort of chap, still decided he had a live one. He had me step out of my van, put my heels and toes together, and follow the end of his pen with my eyes (while he shined a flashlight in my face)..This went on for what seemed like an eternity..needless to say, I went home unscathed. It's been a number of years since I've had a drop of booze or any other such night-time "grown-up" entertainment..but I'm kind of creeped out now driving home late...I'll have to say that driving away from a DUI stop was pretty empowering. Some years ago, that coulda been a really, really bad night...the only crappy thing about it was I somehow fried something while trying to retrieve some old gunked up license plate bulb assembly wires (and all the fuses seem intact)..so the plate is now illuminated (more or less), but the CD player and dome lights are out...which brings us back to the jambox in the front seat..hehha

Y'know, I love getting a good nights sleep on Friday, and waking up EARLY on Saturday. I dunno..sleeping in bums me out anymore..like I missed something.
The neighbor's gardens are looking pretty good to the deer, so the little fellas are getting closer and closer to the house..They're difficult to sneak up on, but the flash from a camera freaks em out and they stand still. Hopefully I'll be able to get some more wildlife pics from the driveway.
Underlings played at the Oak St. Speakeasy last Friday with Minmae. Great Portland band.Cool guys. I picked up a 12 inch vinyl from them that is really smokin'..it also has cool art and grooves on only one side..cool, cool, cool..I love funky vinyl.
Saturday we drove up to Salem and played a house party. The house was funky, the kids were enthusiastic (to say the very, very least), and a great time was had by all..Dan Jones kicked it off with a solo set. Freeking amazing..Dan is awesome..We played next, had a ball...This group called Phantom! went on and brought the house down..this was some high, high energy stuff. One of the best I've seen in a while..Shy Seasons went on last..another great Oregon band.
I took a sick day on Monday..paid!...and never really de-compressed into the work week..but I made it without freaking out. Kinda auto-pilot for four days.
Looking forward to a relaxing, sunny weekend. Life is good.

Last Friday, May 22 at Luckey's was a freekin' blast.The Soothesayers kicked more ass than a donkey. Spread the word!..The Underlings had a ball!..Local roots rock n' punkers Hayduke closed the night, and despite havin some technical instrument troubles, they motored through and rocked it big time. They also brought a big ol' pack of friends who party like its 1989! Looking forward to seeing them again!....Lotsa people came out to celebrate the beginning of the 3 day weekend. Great time. Got to see a lot of friends and met some new ones. Cant beat that at all.
I'm a lucky man.

Whoa!..Stuff has been a happenin'!..The Underlings played a gig on a TUESDAY night..KInd of unusual for us..but the legendary FITZ of DEPRESSION from Olympia were headin' out on tour and we were asked to be one of the openers. It started as a cluster-frick..It was at the Samurai Duck (for lack of any other available venue)..There were maybe three people involved in the booking of this place, and I dont think any of em spent more than a minute or two talking to eachother...In any case, it ended up being a ROCKING night..STARVATION DIET opened up..good hardcore band. Kinda reminded me of Septic Death from the 80s..I feel pretty confident that the 'Lings rocked it..Bryant and Ed were on fire. Love playing with those guys..FITZ OF DEPRESSION freakin' blew it out!..considering there were maybe 10 people in the "crowd" maybe a few more..these dudes rocked it like it was a dang coliseum gig for thousands..inspiring!..swell guys too.

Took Wed. off. Glad I did that..I drove into Fall Creek for a while and waddled around with a camera. Got some nice shots...beautiful back there...and hardly anybody was there. Perfect day!

Mandy and I drove up to Portland yesterday to visit my daughter at school..When we get there my daughter says "Hey, I've got something to show you guys. Lets go for a walk."..we head up to the art building. The art class had been working on these enormous charcoal drawings of faces..Evidently my daughter had found an old picture of me from when I was like 22 or 23 and drew that!..THis kinda freaked me out!..but wow..of all the mugs she coulda drawn..I'm really honored..and she's a really, really talented artist..We headed downtown. Checked out the Portland market, Powell Books, a record store..took a nice stroll. Great time.

Hue's Battery

I've got a pal at work named Hue..Thats right. Thats how he spells it..anyways, Hue wakes up this morning, gets ready for work, and gets in his truck. No lights, no radio, nothin'.Figuring his battery connection was bad, he jumps out, opens his hood and gets a great surprise..Not only had someone STOLEN his battery, but they REPLACED IT with an OLD CRAPPY ONE !!..They had taken the time to remove his battery, placed the brace off to the side (I guess it didnt fit the old cruddy one), put the junker in, and reconnected the terminals..Maybe the battery thief felt guilty about Hue not getting his 9 dollar trade-in discount ? Mysterious...Anyway..good ol' Hue has a brand spankin' new battery, and a funny story to tell.

Mighty fine weekend..Got off to a bit of a rough start though. Had a truck show up at my work about 30 minutes before quittin' time. Nothing like staying a few hours late on Friday and unloading a truck..dont get me wrong..no biggie. I've had far worse problems...but still..c'mon!

Things were WAY better when I got home..Mandy and I were celebrating our 2 YEAR anniversary this weekend..very cool..She had picked up some awesome Thai carry-out for dinner. And she got me some Sony HEADPHONES, a cool rock magazine, and THREE candy bars!..We had breakfast Saturday at the local mom n' pop chow spot, and drove way back into Fall Creek in the afternoon.

Saturday night The Underlings played the Astoria with May Harpoon..Had a great time. Diggin' that place...A lot different from other venues. Real basic. No sound-guy..just set-up, plug a couple of mikes into the pa head and let 'er rip..Buncha friends were there and a good time was had by all..by the way..May Harpoon is a smokin' band..dig um..Swell guys too.

Today I got to hang out with my daughter who's on Spring Break from college. We chowed Indian food, drove around town for a bit, hit the record store, and walked around Hendricks Park for a while..Believe it or not, there's some rhododendron blooms beginning to make their appearance up there.

I turned forty last weekend. As an angry younger fella, 40 wasnt something I had really any intention of seeing...DUMB!..hehhahah...
Life is good. I'm living some of the best days I've ever had, and I'm positive there's many more ahead of me. I've got friends and family I love and care about.I've got a daughter in college! I'm playing the music I love to play. I've set some things right that I screwed up in the past..maybe even figured out how to learn from my mistakes..In spite of myself I've got a wonderful woman who loves me.. (or at least finds me remotely interesting)..and I've got a job and an address!..not bad.

Crazy..out here in the sticks there was hardly a speck of snow (yeeahh!).Eugene on the other hand, was a big icy mess yesterday...yuck...I imagine that every single kid in Eugene prayed and hoped and wished for snow on Sunday night..and succesfully visualized a big white nasty gross day into existence..Personally, I hate the shit..maybe someday I'll change my mind..probably not any time soon..

On December 6th the Underlings played at The Oak Street Speakeasy with The London Flush and Long Tall and Ugly..Both of these bands were ON in a big, big way. Our set felt great too and we got a great response. LOtsa fun. I'd also like to add that the Speakeasy is AWESOME..terrific place to have a show..Great staff, great people hanging out, dynamite food..Dig it.

On Dec. 12th we played at the Astoria Bar on West 11th with Half Shark/ Half Jesus. Another super-duper night. HSHJ was rockin' and I might add that they are some really, really cool folks. Dig um...Oh yeah..Ed's amp went tits up during the second or third song and HSHJ loaned us an amp..saved!..The Astoria Bar is a very cool and very small place that is perfect for rockings..I think after a bit of promotion this place is going to have some explosive gigs.

Two really fun Underlings weekend gigs in a row. Nov. 8th we played with BAITBALL at the Wandering Goat. Great band. Really cool people too. I really recommend seein' these folks. The other night, Nov. 15, we played at Kelly's Olympian in Portland with The OVULATORS and DAN JONES AND THE SQUIDS. The Ovs and Squids were both really together and awesome..The 'Lings went on last, and despite bein' fairly tired and spaced out, I feel like we did pretty well..I wish I could remember the sound guy's name. Really cool guy.. Bryant and I ended our evening by driving back to Eugene in a two car caravan through some SERIOUS fog.. Couldnt see a thing...we basically relied almost entirely on The Force..crazy.

We did it! The Underlings CD is born!..Our buddy Don even brought us cigars..man, that's cool..The two show CD release party at Sam Bond's was a blast. At the dinner show there were all these little kids rockin' out in front of the stage..I saw some of the best dance moves ever. Chanteuse opened up the show. Glad I finally got to see them..Bass, Ukelele, and drums..Kind of a folky, fairy tale,ny no-wave feel to it..if that makes sense..Lots of good friends and family in attendance. The second show brought the next shift of rockers.Also a blast..Squids got that one goin' in style!..I dont know how they do it, but damn..ALWAYS slayin' it..The 'Lings set felt pretty good. Kinda loosened up from playing earlier..Dan Jones joined us for a couple of songs. Twas a blast..As usual, I met some cool folks and got to hang around with some people I dont get to see very often..Got a chance to talk with Eric from SYSTEM YOU RADIO. Sounds like he's got some good things a'brewin'..I'll definately be keepin' an ear out for his shows..Anyhoo, I left feeling better than I did when I got there (and I dont drink!), I feel fucking blessed to be an Underling, and I'm blown away by all the big hearted, cool as hell people that I keep running into.
As for today..Its been a little difficult decompressing into the work scene..Kind of tough getting my land-legs back.but it's cool..always is.

Last week as the heavy weather was heading toward Florida, I got a little concerned for my old pal Jay. I sent a couple of emails to see how he and his brother were doing and didnt get a response.I figured the power was out. Well, last night I get an email with the skinny on went down. Evidently the hardest of the storm didnt hit their neck of the woods at all, but the big WAVES did.Big, beautiful, bountious waves. Waves so wonderous that Jay could not help himself from grabbing the cheesy old boogie board and giving it a go...Needless to say, our brave body-boarder was THRASHED by the surf and plunged to the depths where his brainy little head was smacked on the sand...Fortunately he survived..The life guard nearby provided some neosporin and hydrogen peroxide. The other folks on the beach gathered around and exclaimed " AAuuuuugh!", and Jay has spent the last several days on the couch, convelescing and looking kinda like a pomegranate.

While I was doing a MUCH needed string change on my bass today I got to thinking about my pal Stace. Without this dude the cars wouldnt run, the computers wouldnt compute, firing pins would stick, solders wouldnt hold..I could go on for days..I dont know how many times I've got myself neck-deep and called this man for a serious informational bail-out. Stacey is one of those dudes who could rebuild a 1936 camera from parts while explaining the more esoteric attributes of a modern computer and cook a righteous pork tenderloin and home-made biscuits at the same time..(I've SEEN this!)...He doesnt care much for fishin' and punk-rock, and our politics can be nearly polar opposites at times..but it doesnt matter. If there were more dudes like him around, the world would be a calmer, smoother runnin' place. The countyside would ring with belly laughs and smell of home cooked meals..

I just finished up 3 books by John Burdett..Bangkok 8, Bangkok Tatoo, and Bangkok Haunts..Fast paced thriller/mystery type dealies set in Thailand..Detective Sonchai Jitpleecheep is the main man..A devout Buddhist detective from the Royal Thai Police Force..These books get to the meat and potatoes pretty quick..great stuff..(Thanks Mandy!)..

After months of gearing up, the Joe Strummer Tribute/Benefit at the WOW Hall was a blast! Money was being raised for Strummerville and for a skate park under the Washington-Jefferson bridge..Good idea..The skaters would have a central spot in town and the neighborhood would change yet another notch for the better..I imagine the burrito sales in the area would boom like a sunnofabitch as well.Hopin that all works out.

I met some terrific people and got to share the stage with some dynamite folks.
Casey Neil was dyno-mite and I really hope to catch him the next time he's in town.ZZ Clash aka Spanish Balls was rockin' it fierce! This was an all-star shin-dig throwin' down with some serious sound. Shit..Dan went through two guitars and eventually played the Joe Strummer Tribute tele that got raffled off! Big thanks to Ronni and Don..oh yeah..my sweety's sister Ronni wins the Tele,and GIVES it to her hubby Don..who loans it to ZZ Clash so they can finish the set..good fuckin' vibes or what?..GREAT NIGHT!!!

Well..Guess I can officially say SUMMER is here. After 2 or 3 false starts and some serious stretches of overcast, the Gods decided to throw the switch.

The Underlings have an outdoor gig in Scobert Park (4th and Blair) on Wed. the 9th at 7pm. I'm excited to see who turns out for that one. Been meeting some great folks at gigs. Really grateful to be part of that outfit.

After about a year of consumption of everybody else's internet offerings, I figure maybe I'll try to produce some of my own.

Looking forward to this weekends Underlings show at Luckey's. Long Tall and Ugly will be playin as well, as is Half Shark/ Half Jesus..This gig is going to be a hoot. I always enjoy playing Luckeys.

I turned on the tube this morning and got an opportunity to watch American Hardcore again..Y'Know, I think what I enjoyed most about this movie was the amount of discussion and critisism that ensued after its release. Some people felt like their region got left out. Some folks felt like certain personalities got a bit too much attention..Considering they had roughly 2 hours to fit 3,00 bands, an entire continent, and another million and a half ideas, I'd say it was pretty well done.And whats more Hardcore than feeling unnoticed and left out?.My favorite documentaries though of the last few years were We Jam Econo; the story of the Minutemen, Unknown Passage, the Dead Moon story, and the mightiest of all..MC5;A True Testimonial (bootleg). I hope and pray to the spirits of rock that all parties involved in that 5 flick can bury the hatchet and put that out for the world to see. The story needs to be told!
